SRINAGAR, July 10: Protests broke out in some areas of downtown Srinagar today immediately after the congregationalFriday prayers. Some of the police personnel and protesters sustained minor injuries during the clashes that continued for hours together.
Reports and eye-witnesses said that as soon as the congregational Friday prayers culminated at the Jamia Masjid, a group of youth appeared near the Nowhatta Chowk and started moving towards the Khanyar Police Station. The youth who were approximately 100 in number tried to attack the Khanyar police station and also tried their best to storm the concerned police station.
The police personnel at the Khanyar Police Station came out and carried out a counter attack on the agitated youth. The protesters were chased away and as soon as they reached near the Khawaja Bazar area they started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel posted there. Here too the protesters were chased away to the Nowhatta main chowk.
At the Nowhatta main chowk the protesters took position and resorted to heavy stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel. The stone pelting was replied with the lobbing of smoke shells. Police lobbed dozens of smoke shells on the protesters to disperse them, but the efforts failed since the protests carried on for many hours.
The whole Nowhatta Chowk and the nearby Khawaja Bazar got filled with smoke and nothing was visible on the ground. Reports said that some cops and CRPF personnel sustained minor injuries during the protests with some protesters also sustaining injuries. The situation remained tense for hours together with both the traffic as well as pedestrian movement also getting affected. During the protests a group of masked youth could be seen waving the ISIS flags. The waving of ISIS flags has become a norm during the protests in downtown Srinagar over the past couple of weeks. Today a group of masked youth reached an under construction building in the area where the protests were going on and waved the ISIS flags atop the building.
It would be in place to mention here that chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had asked the youth not to carry out protests without any programme. Mirwaiz had asked youth to desist from stone pelting in the downtown Srinagar more so in the areas falling in the vicinity of Jamia Masjid.
At the same time, Mirwaiz after the congregational Friday prayers today led the funeral prayers in absentia of former Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) President, Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan who passed away today at the age of 91 years. Mirwaiz welcomed the bilateral talks between Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharief at Ufa.
