Social activists demand ban on sale & purchase of chinese kite thread 7/31/2015 12:50:00 AM Early Times Report Jammu, July 30: A deputation consisting of S.Balvinder Singh social activist and Convener Sangarsh RTI Movement and Rumpy Madaam Chairperson SAVE " Save Animals Value Environment" today met District Magistrate/ District development Commissioner Jammu S. Simarandeep Singh and gave him a representation urging him to ban the sale & purchase of Chinese/indigenous thread, used for flying kites, made out of plastic or similar such synthetic material, under CrPC . They submitted that various State Government Including Gujrat, Punjab, Chennai, Delhi, Maharashtra have already imposed ban on its use looking at the detrimental effects of these types of threads on people, birds, animals and the environment also. The lethality of synthetic thread has been documented with hundreds of birds causalities and thousands of birds injuries reported over the last few years. They said that there are also reports of pedestrians and people commuting on two wheelers also being injured/killed with the deadly "manja" of the cut kite slashing their necks and causing loss of blood. District Magistrate agreed to the adverse effects of the thread on soil, water ways and cattle population, caused by cutting or falling of such thread from atmosphere which are non- bio degradable and can cause immense injury to ecology once it touches the soil strata.
