Jammu, Sept 15: Attribute it to the total lack of accountability on part of the officers of the J&K State Sports Council; Moulana Azad Stadium, the premier sports training centre of the state is undergoing rapid decay and the over 700 sportspersons of Jammu, many of them those who have represented the country who come here to train every day, are offered not only poor infrastructure, but also poor training environment.
Poor and primitive infrastructure and training facilities have had decisive effect on the sports performance of athletes of the state at national level competitions over the years, but total lackadaisical attitude of the Sports Council officers to maintain available facilities is reprehensible.
The latest casualty of the utter lack of accountability on part of the Council officers is the swimming pool, which is without electricity for close to a week and filtration plant has been rendered defunct, impelling the swimmers to practice in dirty waters. Sources disclose that the Swimming pool of the MA Stadium had been operating on an illegal power connection drawn from a PHE service line, which the latter disconnected, leaving the swimming pool without electricity. However, an employee of the Council divulged that Council had not paid its power bill that had swollen to lakhs of rupees. "It speaks volumes about the incapability of the Sports Officer Jammu, who is nodal officer of Council administration in Jammu when Darbar is in summer capital" said a swimmer. Rajan Sharma, Sports officer Jammu however denied that there was any pending bill. "We had a common connection with PHE, which they severed arguing that their motors were not working due to excessive load" he said adding that Swimming pool shall have a separate connection in next few days.
Meanwhile, sportspersons and their parents are weary of the stadium being reduced to a garbage dump. "Right from the entrance to the playing arenas and surroundings, stadium has gives the look of a ghost house, with heaps of garbage, clogged drains, long weeds, broken pathways and stinking dumps all around" said a former national player who comes to M A stadium for a regular evening jog. "Why the sports officer should not be held accountable for such a shabby condition of the stadium?" he questioned.
A parent who accompanies her child to the Stadium everyday for training said that there is no facility for clean drinking water and young sportspersons are forced to drink unsafe tank water. "The inability of the Sports council to make provision of safe drinking water sportsmen is a reflection of its indifference towards them" she added.
