Basohli bridge divides BJP Ministers
12/23/2015 11:22:48 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 23: Two senior BJP ministers appear to be at loggerheads over the construction of first cable-stayed bridge in Basohli area of Kathua.
Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar would dedicate the first cable-stayed bridge of north India to the nation on Thursday. The bridge would provide close connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
The difference of opinion between the two senior BJP leaders came to fore on Wednesday when both the leaders tried to take credit for establishment of the cable bridge.
"The bridge was not constructed because of an individual effort of a person but it is built by the whole nation," a senior BJP leader told reporters on Wednesday.
He said UPA laid the foundation for the bridge but NDA completed it, adding, "It is not anybody's individual effort."
Reacting to the recent statement of another senior BJP minister wherein he had said the bridge was approved during his tenure as MP, the Minister said,
"Basholi is my hometown and we had agitated a lot for this bridge to connect the two neighbouring states."
He said being a BJP leader he had some years ago also lodged an FIR against the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah for directing lathi-charge on protesters agitating for the bridge.
The foundation for the bridge was laid by the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in May 2011 and the work started in September 2011.
On the controversy over appointment of new Principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar, the Minister said PDP-BJP had no differences over his appointment as it is the matter concerning the Health Ministry.
On BJP's silence over service tax on heli-services for Vaishno Devi pilgrims, he said, "BJP is not silent on the issue and the government is working to resolve it."
The Minister also said that Urban Local Bodies elections would be held in March next year followed by Panchayat level polls in May-June.
On the National Food Security Act, he alleged that the Opposition is confusing the people as it has been introduced in the welfare and interest of the masses.
