Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 22: Government on Wednesday called Border Security Force (BSF) after fourteen long years to tackle the ongoing situation in capital city Srinagar.
A senior official wishing anonymity told 'Early Times' that the decision to call BSF in was taken to calm the seething situation in parts of Srinagar in the aftermath of the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Millitant Burhan Muzaffar Wani..
Pertinently, besides calling some additional companies of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), government had also deployed additional companies of Sashatra Seema Bhal (SSB) to man the streets.
It is worth mentioning that the government had replaced BSF with CRPF after fighting militants for fourteen years and killing around 3000 amongst them including some top commanders in Kashmir valley.
BSF troopers in riot gear uniform were first seen manning streets from Residency Road to Regal Chowk, the commercial nerve center of the Srinagar city this afternoon.
"The decision was aimed at controlling violence in the aftermath of the killing of Fateh Kadal youth by police last evening, even if the situation remained comparatively calm in Srinagar however additional deployment was made as a precautionary measure to deal with any eventuality," the official said.
In order to deal militants and their activities more effectively in Kashmir valley, the central government much before Burhan encounter had decided to replace CRPF with BSF.
The decision was taken after the attack on CRPF bus in Pampore area, which left eight security personnel dead and another 21 injured.
Given the track record of BSF in combating militancy in 1990s, the government was seriously looking into the option. The BSF had killed 2,800 militants during its 14 years of engagement in counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir. That comprised 100 top commanders, including the prized scalp of Gazi Baba, who was India's most-wanted militant following the December 13, 2001, attack on the Parliament. The force had arrested 9,400 militants and 10,600 weapons were seized since '90s. BSF is said to be more lethal force specialized in counterinsurgency than CRPF, which is mainly a crowd-controlling force.
