Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 29: Despite the fact that central government is spending crores on post offices across the country, post offices in Kashmir are still lacking infrastructure and employees customer relationship is at thebliwest ebb. A senior official of postal department wishing anonymity told Early Times that the ground reality presents a different story altogether with a majority of the post offices still grappling with lack of facilities and poor infrastructure which is badly affecting the work culture at the large extent. The post offices in the far flung areas of J&K presents very pathetic condition as various offices have failed to meet the needs of the residents due to lack of basic infrastructure. Maximum post offices are running in a single room and has only 2-3 employees, which affects the work culture on daily basis, the official said.
He said the central government is spending huge amount on the functioning of post offices but they are also supposed to provide better services to the people on a systematic way, but the irony is dozens of its offices lack manpower to cater the uprising needs of people and the appointing staff also fails to meet the new challenges with more expectations from the common masses.A group of people told early times that, the post offices which are located in the outskirts of Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley has no proper seating arrangement, toilet and drinking water facility for the visitors.
"A power generator , computer which are installed at the various post office have been lying defunct from past several months, adding the employees and visitors like customers at post offices are facing innumerable problems owing to poor infrastructure and other problems, they added.
However if sources are to be believed they said, the higher authorities are busy in getting publicity by organising press conferences, post office festival, schemes but it seems they have forgotten their basic obligations towards its customers and employees which are mandatory to make it affective in the present scenario.
Shazia Akhter from Bandipora district told Early Times that, few days back I had to post application forms for employment, but due to the poor facilities being provided at every post office is very difficult to get the work done in time, it not only wastes the precious time but irritates with the functioning of its staff.
We are facing problems in receiving important letters and admit cards of competitive exams. If central government cannot provide better facilities in time then there is no fun of opening hundreds of its branches across the Kashmir valley, adding that to open a new branch is not necessary but to make it functional with all modern facilities is more important than anything else, she added.
