Early Times Report
Baramulla, Oct 9: The ongoing unrest in Kashmir valley has entered 94th day and hit the fruit industry badly. The massive increase in freight has further added to the woes of the growers.
The fruit growers are seen busy in packing, grading, scaling as the peak season of crop harvesting is on in Jammu and Kashmir. Other fruit crop is also being stripped off from the trees. According to sources the continuous unrest in Kashmir valley has hit the fruit industry. The growers find it difficult to transport their crop to the other markets of India.
Many fruit growers across north Kashmir spoke to early times to express their anguish over the development. They also blamed the state government for not providing the transport facility to them .
The Sopore fruit mandi is one of the biggest fruit trade centers of South Asia. We used to send our crop to rest of the country via this mandi but this year it has not been possible due to unrest and this may have disastrous consequences on the fruit industry, said Nazir Ahmad, a fruit grower.
However Nazir said that, this season the quality and quantity of fruit has not remained above average as the pesticides and other chemicals were off from the market during spraying months, and the unrest was an another factor of disappointment for growers.
Apple fruit is the mainstay of Kashmirs economy with a turnover of more than thousand crores a year but this time it is a different story, President, Sopore fruit mandi, Mushtaq Tantray told Early Times that, the continuous strike in J&K have damaged the best varieties of Kashmiri apples from north and Shopian of south Kashmir.
In 2015-16 almost two crore boxes of apple were transported from north Kashmir to the other parts of India, which means that 60-70% of its crop is grown in North Kashmir only, said Mushtaq Tantray.
