Early Times Report

Rajouri, Oct 9: With no let up in illegal encroachment of government and custodian lands in Rajouri, the "land mafia" has grabbed over 30 kanals of prime government land near Seyot bridge in Nowshehra tehsil of the district.
Official sources said the "land mafia" has grabbed the vacant land by constructing a small shed on the vacant land after taking the revenue officials and other concerned into confidence.
"This land mafia has a typical modus-operandi; they first grab some land, then construct a shed which they pretend to be a religious place depending upon which community has dominance in the area… After a few months they get land records fudged and show the government property as personal," said a senior official in know of the matter. The officials said the "land mafia" which has minted fortunes has been active in the area for the past around 15 years. "With the Revenue officials being hand-in-glove with such land brokers, over the years they have grown very strong, influential and powerful in the corridors of power and thus nobody touches them in any regime," the officials explained.
They said once the government land is shown as proprietary land it is sold to private parties who utilize is for real estate business.
Official sources said over the years over 1,000 kanal government land including that belonging to Custodian department has been grabbed by the land mafia.
The residents of Nowshehra, who are up in arms over the land grab said "We have been protesting against this injustice for the last several years but every time we seek government intervention, we are threatened of dire consequences."
The locals said they had approached the Revenue officials and the Tehsildar concerned but to get threat of life from "land mafia". "What we got to know is that the officials whom we approached, leaked our complaint before land mafia who send goons to threaten us," the locals complained.
The locals have appealed the Divisional Commissioner Jammu and District Commissioner Rajouri to look into the matter.
