Farooq blames Pakistan for Sunjwan attack; Omar BJP and PDP
Politics, NC-style
2/11/2018 10:45:45 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 11: They have done it again to promote themselves and their politics. NC president Farooq Abdullah has blamed Pakistan for the Saturday Sunjwan terror attack and his son and the party working president and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Omar Abdullah has blamed the BJP and the PDP for the attack. Farooq Abdullah spoke in Delhi and Omar Abdullah in Jammu.
Sensing the mood of the nation in the aftermath of the attack, Farooq Abdullah sought to create an impression that he was against Pakistan. "Pakistan must stop cross-border terrorism. It must stop exporting terrorists into India failing which India would have no other option but to attack Pakistan. And if it happens, the results would be disastrous," said Farooq Abdullah while reacting to the Sunjwan incident.
He was the same Farooq Abdullah, who had 14 months ago asked his party-men to join the Pakistan-founded, aided, guided, controlled and directed Hurriyat Conference and fight against India. He had said the Hurriyat Conference that NC was not its enemy but its friend and the NC supported what the Hirriyat Conference stood for. Again, he was the Same Farooq Abdullah who only recently warned India, telling that "Pakistan Ne koi Chudian Nahin pehni".
The fact of the matter is that he changed his tune only to give the wounded and outraged nation to understand that he was with it at this hour of grief. It would not be surprising if he speaks altogether differently on the same issue sooner than later and pitch for dialogue with Pakistan, saying Pakistan can't be wished away and India has to talk to it if it wished peace in the region. He would sooner than later would say Pakistan is a factor in the state of J&K and demand semi-independence for it, saying this is the only solution to the (so-called) Kashmir problem. He is known for changing colours and tunes at different places seeing the audience.
And Omar Abdullah took just the opposite line to cater to his constituency in the Kashmir Valley, which started distancing itself from it after Farooq Abdullah handed over the NC to him in 2002. He saw in the Sunjwan an opportunity to beat the PDP and the BJP, which had snatched the political space the NC occupied before 2002. He accused Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of destroying Kashmir and mishandling Jammu. "Even Jammu has become unsafe," he said, adding that the BJP, which was in power both in the state and at the centre, was just incompetent handle the situation.
Omar Abdullah conveniently overlooked the role his party played in the state after 1947. It was the NC, which independently and in alliance with the Congress, promoted politics of separatism based on fanaticism. It never allowed democracy to flower in Kashmir and it consistently poisoned the ears of the people of Kashmir by denouncing Indian Constitution, Indian laws, the Army and also by making the gullible Muslims in Kashmir that J&K was a disputed territory and the Indian presence in the state was unlawful. It is the NC and the Congress, which created the whole mess, and made others in Kashmir to take recourse to the politics of competitive communalism and secessionism to replace the NC and capture the government.
The kind of politics Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah have been playing brought the state to such a sorry pass. They have forfeited the right to blame the PDP and the BJP, notwithstanding the fact that their role is also not above board.
