NIA to quiz central jail cops, arrests likely
2/20/2018 12:29:16 AM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Even as the National Investigation Agency recently took custody of five accused arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in connection with the escape of Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Mohammed Naveed Jhatt from the SMHS hospital on February 6, the NIA is likely to question some of the JKP cops posted at the jail.
Sources said there was every possibility that some of the cops could be arrested for more questioning after the preliminary inquiry.
Sources said the NIA has not ruled out hand of some policemen in Naveed's escape. Sources said the NIA has already been verifying the antecedents of some of the cops under scanner for dereliction of duties.
"The case is progressing promptly and no one will be spared," said a source privy to the inquiry. It was reliably learnt that another team of investigators from NIA would chip in the services of their counterparts already on the job in Kashmir.
The investigators have already been saying that the Jammu and Kashmir Police failed to comply intelligence inputs that there was a possibility that prisoners would try to flee.
Sources said on the fateful day, Naveed was escorted by the mere two cops with one of them having no weapon. "Most of the security protocols for security of such prisoners were breached, so the case has to be probed from all angles," agreed a senior official.
The militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack and Naveed's picture with another HM commander, Saddam Padder, had gone viral within hours of the escape.
Sources said that the freed militant set the policemen on the wrong track and feigned a headache to escape from the custody.
The state's home department, headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, suspended the Superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar Hilal Ahmad Rather after the militants escaped and also ordered an inquiry.
Sources close to NIA said that a pistol-wielding militant, who was assisted by three other youth, fired gunshots at the policemen to free Naveed from their custody. They also provided him with a vehicle and a motorcycle to help him run away after the firing at the hospital.
Sources said that Naveed had been frequently complaining of stomach ache and was treated at the SMHS hospital for a renal ailment. But interestingly on the fateful day he escaped, he had complained of a headache.
