Figures expose 'equitable development' myth
Jammu to get Rs 62 cr less than Kashmir under DDUGJY
6/4/2018 11:44:09 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 4: On Monday, when the government was seen beating the trumpet of one of the vital power schemes in the state, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), what it tried to put under the carpet is the fact that Jammu region was ruthlessly discriminated in terms of allocation of funds under this scheme as well.
Official documents in possession of Early Times reveal that Jammu region has been sanctioned 62 crore rupees less than Kashmir Valley under DDUGJY. While the Valley will get Rs 293.30 crore, Jammu will have Rs 231.45 crore in its kitty. The scheme will enable to initiate much-awaited reforms in the rural areas.
Notably, the government on Monday stated that it will address the issues of water and power scarcity during summers. All PDD schemes were finalized and the requisite amount has been sanctioned to start the work any time soon. It further announced that by the end of December 2018 every home in the state will get quality power connection through DDUGJY and SAUBHAGYA schemes.
However, what has exposed government's dubious approach in giving due share to the Jammu region is the fact that under the various power reforms schemes including DDUGJY there has been worst discrimination witnessed in terms of distribution of funds to Kashmir and Jammu region of the state.
The power dearth in Jammu has been high for a long time, with successive regimes acting as mute spectators to such dreadful crises. As per the reports, Jammu region of the state has highest number of un-electrified hamlets in entire state. However, the PDD authorities seem little interested in mitigating such issues of the people of Jammu. It has preferred cricket over providing electricity to the far off hamlets of Jammu.
According to a survey conducted by the state dispensation, there were as many as 62 villages in Jammu region that are as on date un-electrified. According to government sources the number of hamlets in the countryside of Jammu could be more with no electricity facilities.
In the same survey that has taken off the lid over the pseudo claims of Jammu development has stated that it is this region that has been giving major share of electricity fee. In terms of revenue collection, major revenue is being generated from Jammu, reads the report compiled by state's power department.
If reports are to be believed, the electrification of the major hamlets of Jammu province was kept in limbo by the successive regimes of the state despite knowing the fact that these far flung areas are in the dire need of electricity facility as are the people hailing from cities and towns.
Furthermore, official documents reveals that in yet another instance of discrimination between Jammu and Kashmir region, under the much hyped Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), Jammu has got a whopping 82 crore less than Valley, leaving thousands of dwellings craving for electricity in the lurch.
