Army commando martyred , gun battle underway in Kandi forests of Kupwara

KUPWARA, July 11: An Indian Army commando was martyred in an encounter that began between militants and security forces in this north Kashmir district today.
A top army official stationed in Kupwara said that yesterday late evening security forces received information about a group of militants hiding in the area, following which an operation was launched in the forest region.
As army intensified the searches, the militants hiding in the area opened fire triggering off an encounter.
An additional reinforcement was called in from nearby army camps to counter the militants which are believed to be 4-5 in number, an army official told ET.
The official further said that the gunfight between heavily armed militants and security forces was on in Badibehak and Saduo ganga forests till the last reports came in, adding quickly the whole forest and its adjacent areas have been tightly cordoned off to neutralize the militants.
An army commando that was killed during the encounter has been identified as Sepoy Mukul Meena of 3 Para Regiment.
He had received multiple injuries after which he was moved to army base hospital in Drugmulla where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
Meanwhile Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, A Shriram Dinkar while talking to Early Times said that, an army commando was martyred during the encounter in Kandi forests of Kupwara today.
The operation is on, till the last reports came in, when asked about the elimination of militants in the area, he said that yet it is not confirm, we will let u know accordingly, the SSP said.
However sources said that a joint team of security forces including army's 47 RR, police and SOG was seen cordoning the forest areas after they were having specific inputs about the presence of militants in dense woods.
A group of 3-4 foreign militants was reported in the area; possibly they were hiding in the area, and a massive search operation has been launched to trace them in the forest region, said sources.
