Ex-Ikhwan commander surrenders security, says Delhi betrayed

Early Times Report
Anantnag, Sept 5: A former top commander of pro-government militia on Wednesday surrendered security cover provided to him by the state government.
Liyaqat Ali Khan alleged that New Delhi betrayed him and allowed 'a group of elements' to hatch conspiracies against him.
"Conspiracies were hatched against me since 2002, but in 2007 a New Delhi based channel labeled me Al-Qaeda chief of Jammu and Kashmir. I went to New Delhi, agitated before the authorities at higher level, but the issue was never investigated," Khan told Early Times.
He said that it was New Delhi, which encouraged conspirators by not identifying them and punishing them as per law.
"In VK Singh VS Bikram Singh [former Army chiefs] case these conspirators tried to make a scapegoat by telling former Army Chief General Bikram Singh that I was behind all that happened here and in fact supporting the NGO that took the case to court," he said.
"General Singh then got the issue investigated by state CID department and all other agencies and found that I was not involved at any stage, but then no action against all those who tried to implicate me in some sensitive issues," he added.
In a recent development, Khan said, district police withdrew his security cover without giving him any reason.
"It's result of New Delhi's lethargic approach that now officials at district level are humiliating and insulting people like me who stood against the winds and played crucial role in strengthening democracy and democratic institutions by curbing militancy," he said. The former Ikhwan commander said that he feels betrayed. "I am not asking for 'mahal' and chair. I just wanted a fair investigation into all these issues. I feel betrayed because New Delhi didn't take cognizance of my complaints," he said. Khan, who shunned militancy in nineties to help New Delhi in resorting peace and order in the state and conduct elections in 1996 says New Delhi is "fast loosing friends in Jammu and Kashmir."
"I have surrendered security, and the future course of action will be announced accordingly," Khan said.
