Border residents hold protest, oppose construction of bunkers
9/10/2018 11:01:53 PM
Early Times Report

KATHUA, Sept 10: Hundreds of people hailing from villages along International Border today assembled at village Bobiya under the leadership of ex-Sarpanch Bobiya panchayat, Bharat Bhushan to lodge a protest against the construction of bunkers at zero line under the scheme of centre government.
The work on construction of bunker is about to start as designs and other documentary work have been initiated to finalize the safety of people. People alleged that the whole process of constructing bunkers has been initiated without the keenness of locals.
Earlier Dr Jatinder Singh MoS in PMO and Member of Parliament Kathua- Udhampur constituency promised to provide 5 marlas plot to each family living near zero line in a safe place where people can shift their family members during cross border firing. Centre government kept the promise in abeyance and launched a scheme to construct bunkers in each house without having the knowledge of underground water level. A series of protests were started even before laying the foundation stone of bunkers.
While interacting to ET team, Bharat Bhusahan highlighted the demand of 5 marla plot for each family hailing from zero line and discarded construction of bunker policy of the centre government. He informed that Rs 237 lakh has been sanctioned for each bunker that would be a wastage of money as design is not appropriate and upto the mark.
Ashok Kumar, a social worker, said bunkers would fill with water in rainy season due to open stairs and people would not survive in summer season without having appropriate facilities. He suggested government to recommend a room that can be used throughout the year or 5 marla plot in safe place with same amount recommended for bunkers. People expressed resentment that no official either from local administration, engineers or centre government approached or discussed the matter with actual victims of ceasefire violation. People threatened to launch an agitation against construction of bunkers and in support of 5 marlas plot at safer place.
When approached SDM Hiranagar, Suresh Kumar informed that the file for construction of bunkers has been handed over to PWD to finalize the work. The officer said that the bunkers are immediate safety place during cross border firing so these are mandatory.
