Kavinder supports UT for Ladakh, opposes statehood status for Jammu
BJP in self-destruct mode
12/30/2018 10:37:53 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 30: The BJP is in a self-destruct mode. It has no respect for the sentiments of its own Jammu constituency. Despite the fact that the BJP has been at the receiving end in both Jammu and Ladakh, it continues to take the people of Jammu province for a ride.
How else should one describe the opposition of former J&K Dy CM Kavinder Gupta to the demand in Jammu for separation from Kashmir and demand that seeks status of statehood for Jammu? The senior BJP leader did support the Ladakhis' demand for UT status for Ladakh, but made it loud and clear that the BJP was not for the creation of separate Jammu state.
"Statehood for Jammu proposal is not discussed within the party now. The party doesn't want to trifurcate the state. However, we want Union Territory status for Ladakh," said Kavinder Gupta.
It's strange that the BJP has taken the line that it took without realizing that the people of Jammu will further distance themselves from the BJP. Even otherwise, what the BJP leader said was a contradiction of sorts. How could the BJP support UT for Ladakh and oppose statehood for Jammu at the same time? UT for Ladakh means a sort of separate state having no link with the J&K Government. Grant UT status to Ladakh will automatically mean bifurcation of the state. If the state could be bifurcated, why can't Jammu province be granted the status of statehood?
It is clear that the BJP leader was blissfully ignorant about what the J&K BJP said time and again about the need to reorganize the state on a regional basis to end the Valley domination and discriminatory policies being pursued ruthlessly by the elements in the political establishment.
It needs to be note that the BJP had adopted not once but at least thrice resolutions on the reorganization of the state. It had adopted a resolution on reorganization in 1996, 2002 and 2008. So much so, once it adopted resolution of "trifurcation of J&K".
The BJP would serve the cause of the people of Jammu and the nation only if adopt a line similar to the one it adopted for Ladakh. For, the problems facing the people of both these regions are the same and the origin of the problem is also the same.
