Desperate to save her sinking ship, Mehbooba pins hopes on anti-nationals

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Concerned about the fate of PDP, Mehbooba Mufti has resorted to old tactic by seeking help from militants and separatists to save her sinking ship.
Mehbooba Mufti has been struggling to retain her flock since the BJP withdrew its support to the PDP on June 19. Several senior leaders, including former finance minister Haseeb Drabu, have deserted the party after Governor Satya Pal Malik dissolved the Assembly last year.
Now she has been apparently seeking help from militants and separatists to save her party. "The Jamiat-e-Islami helped her in assembly and parliamentary polls. She has resorted to same old tactic to appease the militants and separatists," a PDP source said.
Since the fall of the PDP-BJP government, the source said that many of her party leaders have been in touch with separatists.
On Sunday, she visited a militant family. She used the visit to say that if "harassment of families of militants is not stopped, it will have consequences leading to further alienation in the Valley".
She visited a woman named Rubina, whose brother is a militant. She alleged that Rubina, along with her husband and brother, were "beaten mercilessly" in police custody.
She urged Governor Satya Pal Malik to prevent such incidents in future, and said that the region "won't be allowed to become a battleground." Her statement is clearly to keep the militants in good books.
Interestingly, Mufti had begun her political journey by frequently visiting militants' families in the mid-1990s.
On Monday, she also called up senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
She conveyed her outrage over the appearance of few youth with IS flag and called it desecration of the most important institution of Kashmir's religious life.
Taking to twitter, Mehbooba wrote, "Jama Masjid and its pulpit are most important landmarks of our religious, cultural moorings. Can't allow barbaric forces to defile it in the name of Islam."
In yet another tweet she wrote, "Appearance of a few youth with IS flag in Jamia Masjid Srinagar is desecration of the most important institution of Kashmir's religious, social life. Called @MirwaizKashmir, Umar sahheb to convey my outrage."
However, sources said that she also discussed with Mirwaiz Umar about the current situation in the valley. "The PDP leaders were also in touch with separatists. She called up Mirwaiz after few PDP leaders first asked separatist leader that she wanted to talk to him," the source said. "She is trying to meet few separatists. They may meet in upcoming days but the separatists wanted to keep it secret. She wants support of separatists in the upcoming polls," the source said.
On Monday she also addressed a press conference where she accused the Central government of creating "division" by getting the Triple Talaq bill.
"Lynching incidents are growing at an alarming rate. Triple Talaq bill goes against the Muslims, which has the potential to create division among Muslims. Zia's Pakistan won't be allowed to create in Ghandi's India," Mehbooba told a presser at her Gupkar residence.
