Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 6: As eighty percent of landlines were restored in the valley, restored across the Srinagar have taken sigh of relief as they feel that they can now communicate with their relatives and loved ones who are residing outside the state.
After remaining closed for over one month, the administration of Jammu and Kashmir had on Thursday restored major landline exchanges including one in the Lal Chowk, where most of the media outlets are placed and are often ringing.
The residents have now hopeful that mobile phones will restored as soon as possible. While as many residents who talked to Early Times are thankful with the development of reopening telephone landlines.
Wajid, a resident of Raj Bagh said, "Landline ring gave soothing sound to my ears which were waiting for the same. I can now make phone calls to my friends who have been residing outside Jammu and Kashmir."
He added, "We used to go to the District Commissioner Office Srinagar to make a phone call that for one to two minutes. Now we can call without break for hours."
The communication clampdown was put in place across the valley after the Centre abrogated Article 370, which used to provide special status to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir including separate flag and constitution. The Article 370 was removed on 5th August and state administration had put landlines at the District Commissioner Office in Srinagar, where thousands of phone calls were made every day.
"From last one month, I have not talked to my cousin who is in Delhi. Our neighbors have a landline and it was restored just yesterday. And soon as their landline started ringing, they all started yelling and screaming out of joy", said Amir, a resident of Lal Chowk.
He added that we have been waiting for a very long to restore the communication and finally it has been done. We have been patient and as soon as the situation gets normal we will fill the subscription form at the BSNL office and will install landline at our home.
Same reactions were witnessed over the valley, where residents are now making calls through landlines and are talking to their loved ones without a break.
