Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 5: Biased approach of Kashmir Centric leadership that ruled J&K for all these years till the Reorganization of J&K in 2019 could be gauged from the fact that established in 1994, the Government College for Engineering and Technology (GCET) has been facing huge dearth of infrastructure and the faculty as, 60 percent teaching post are vacant, similar is case with infrastructure.
Situated at Chachbhalwal, the institute was established 25 years back due to militancy in Kashmir after lapse of so many years, there are only three engineering departments blocks out five, and there are total eight blocks out 20, sources said.
“The blocks are Computer, Mechanical and Civil blocks. The institute has only administrative block, one boys hostel with a capacity of 200 students, one lecturer block comprising eight class rooms, one small library and one workshop, this is we got in 25 years on name of GCET”, sources said, adding that initially Rs 40 crores now the cost of the project has increased three times of its estimated cost, due to cost escalation. “A girls hostel in under construction, 11 building are yet start including Electronic Engineering Block, Electrical Engineering Block, College Canteen, Applied Sciences block, auditorium etc. The slow pace of work is going take another 25 years to complete it”, they said, adding that similarly there is acute dearth of faculty as around 60 percent positions are vacant.
“There are 43 vacant post of faculty out of 71 sanctioned posts. Seriousness of government to raise the standards of GCET can be gauged from the fact that the department of higher education has advertised vacant posts of Assistant Professors after the gap of 21 years in all the five departments vide notification no.02-PSC(DR-P) of 2018 and till date the recruitment process has not started yet”, they said.
“There are total 14 posts of Professors for GCET, out only one is filled remaining 13 are vacant for years, while out of these 13 posts two are vacant due retirement, and 11 posts never filed since the inception of this institute”, they said, adding that the post of Training and Placement is also lying vacant, for this services of Associate Professors is being utilized, and it is badly hampering the routine working of the faculty.
Paradoxically, the post of Principal GCET has also never been filled. “The post is vacant since the creation of the College, in absence of experienced and regular Principal, the college is being governed by care take principal since beginning to till date”, they added.
“The Higher Education Department is running the GCET on adhoc basis, little realizing the fact that Engineering College require subject specialists, world class infrastructure along with all kinds of modern machines and equipments”, they said.
Navin Kumar Choudhary, Principal Secretary, Education Department couldn’t be contacted for his comment over the deplorable condition of lone GCET of J&K.
