Fire breaks out in small unit of manufacturing folding beds | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 23: A major fire broke out on Saturday morning inside the small unit manufacturing folding beds in Canal Road area here. A Fire and Emergency Service official said that a fire this morning broke inside a small unit and a godown. Folding beds were being manufactured inside the unit and also stored in the nearby godown. “Exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained,” he said adding that on receiving information, four fire tenders (three from Gandhi Nagar and one from city) were immediately pressed into service with team of fire fighters. “As the godown was full of plastic material, fibre and metal objects, it took nearly 4 to 5 hours to control the fire,” he said and added that many stored goods have turned into ashes in the fire. “The damage are to be assessed later,” he added. Meanwhile, the locals have rued the running of small units in residential areas. They alleged that many such units and godowns are operating in parts of Jammu especially old city and there is no check on such units, which are posing threat to human lives and other property. “Small multiple units are operating in old city and west of Jammu in two to three room sets and many of them are either illegal or unregistered,” said a local resident and added and the government should take note of this and shift them to elsewhere or book the owners for violating the guidelines laid under Industrial policy.
