Hurriyat (G) Islamabad office closed by Pak
2/18/2007 9:45:11 PM
SRINAGAR | FEB 18 Pakistani authorities have closed down the Islamabad office of breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC), headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. However, the office of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) also headed by Mr Geelani has been functioning normally. Reports reaching here said the Islamabad office of the breakaway HC was closed on January 28 following Mr Geelani’s criticism of the Pakistan government for changing its stand on the Kashmir issue. The office was functioning alongwith other faction of the HC headed by Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq in a government building. The crisis erupted in the HC when Mr Geelani formed his own faction after disassociating with the Mirwaiz group, alleging that some constituents participated in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election through proxy candidates. Mr Geelani was also opposed to bilateral talks with the Indian Government, whereas the other faction of the HC has held three rounds of talks with the government and also visited Pakistan thrice. Mr Geelani had criticised Pakistan for its ‘’flexibility’’ on the Kash...

Will Baglihar lead to neutral mediation in J&K?
2/18/2007 9:24:01 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI | FEB 18 At a time when Gen. Parvez Musharraf has renewed the talk in support of third-party mediation for the resolution of the Kashmir issue, some political circles in Delhi and in Jammu and Kashmir appear to favour the talk in the context of the "success" by the World Bank-appointed neutral expert on the Baglihar hydro-electric project dispute between India and Pakistan. Can the verdict on Jammu's Baglihar dam point the way to that tired chestnut for peace and in Islamabad's current favourite mantra "move from conflict management to conflict resolution"? Can it be done again in setting a maritime boundary in Sir Creek by the 2009 international cut off date or t...

Governor recommends President's rule in UP
2/18/2007 9:23:13 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI | FEB. 18 Adopting secrecy-for-the-sake-of-secrecy policy, Governor of Uttar Pradesh (UP), TV Rajeshwar, has recommended the imposition of President's rule in the State. Rajeshwar did not divulge the secret--that is, his formal recommendation to the Centre for President's rule in UP. UP's controversial Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, did not take more than an hour to smell the rat. He reiterated that any move to "dismiss" his government would be "unconstituional". Elaborating on it, Mulayam Yadav said: "We have not only repeatedly won the vote of confidence on the floor of the State Assembly but we are willing to prove it once again when the State Assembly meet...

Defence Ministry for continuance of AFSPA in J&K
2/18/2007 9:21:39 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI | FEB. 18 Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's personal equation with Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, notwithstanding, the government of India is not ready to concede the demand of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for the troop reduction and withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the troulbed State. Describing as "purely internal administrative mechanism" the PDP's message to the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, asking him to convene a 'special' meeting of the State Cabinet to deliberate on the issue of troop reduction and withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, a senior Ministeria...
