You might have heard of the famous proverb “owners’ pride and neighbour’s envy” but the persistently inclement weather seems to have made the Kashmir Valley a nightmare for its inhabitants but a breathtaking sight for the television watchers and tourists.
Winters in Kashmir Valley attract thousands of adventure loving tourists from across the country for its snow clad valleys and meadows. However, for its inmates the prolonged snowfall is always a worst nightmare which takes the electricity away and essential commodities scarce.
With no respite in sight for fifth consecutive day, the situation is going from bad to worse in Kashmir as Valley has been completed snowed in. Avalanches are killing people while many others are loosing life to severe cold.
Two persons are reported to have been killed by the avalanches in Kupwara district. After the outbreak of an avian flu was reported in Pakistan, the government here has put its monitoring centres stationed along the Line of Control and International Borders on "extra alert".
"We have kept our field officers on extra alert in the border regions to monitor any emergency arisen due to the outbreak of H5N1 virus in Pakistan," said Dr Farooq Kaloo, deputy director Animal Husbandry.

The hardships being undergone by a large number of Kashmiris stranded at Jammu due to blockade of Jammu-Srinagar national highway consecutively for last five days and even air services suspended due to fog and poor visibility. In the wake of heavy rains and snow leading to landslides and threat of avalanches, the buses carrying passengers and goods carriers could not move to Srinagar, with a very large number of vehicles stranded in the way, under bitter cold conditions. In a land mark decision, the central government has decided to declare two important rivers of Jammu and Kashmir as national assets.
Bursar and Ujh multipurpose projects are among 14 which have been declared as national assets. Reports said, with an aim of improving irrigation and enhancing power generation capacity, the Centre today decided to declare 14 river projects as national assets for which it would provide as much as 90 per cent funds. The proposal was cleared by the Union Cabinet.
