NEW DELHI, May 2
Pakistan remains "a major source of Islamic extremism and a safe haven" for some top terrorist leaders. This disclosure is contained in the latest official document issued by Washington. Titled 'US State Department's Country Reports on Terrorism 2006', the document says that the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammed are politically aligned with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and operate primarily in Indian Kashmir.

With rising mercury levels security forces, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, are fearing sudden increase in the level of infiltration of militants from across the LOC in recent weeks.
Police said today “we have reports that groups of militants sneaked into the state from across Kupwara sector in recent weeks.” “ During the months of late March and April militants had crossed into Jammu sector from across Poonch and Rajouri.But their number was far less than the groups that infiltrated from across Kupwara during the same period,”according to the police.

Two employees of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department were injured in a firing incident on the outskirts of Jammu city around midnight on Tuesday after a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan posted inside high security Kot Bhalwal jail opened fire on them minutes after escaping from the jail premises along with his self loaded Rifle (SLR).
