Mehraj-ud-Din’s arrest leaves behind trail of puzzles? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 15: Conflicting news reports involving one of the longest surviving militant trapped by the state police few days ago has left behind a trail of puzzles for senior police officers to respond to before clearing the air of suspense over his arrest. According to one version of the state police officer of the rank of Inspector General the militant who was identified as Mehraj ud-Din Wani, a resident of Sopore was working as active Hawala operator on behalf of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and using his network to pump in fake currency and consignments of arms and ammunition into India via Nepal in the recent years. On the other hand a New Delhi based newspaper in its edition on Saturday published another report describing Mehraj ud Din Wani as valuable asset of the Intelligence Bureau who was passing valuable inputs to Indian agencies to expose the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. The veracity of these news reports are yet to be verified by the concerned authorities but conflicting reports involving same person has created confusion even in the mind interrogators currently questioning him. Earlier, while addressing a press conference here at the Police Control Room, the senior police officer had claimed that Mehraj Ud Din Wani was present in Nepal at the time of hijacking of IC-814 but his direct involvement is yet to be established as he has not said anything authentic so far which would come in handy to link him with the hijackers. In total contrast another news report has given a detailed description of various activities and operations executed by the Mehraj ud Din for Indian agencies. Till the time the central intelligence agencies along with state police will sit together and interrogate him and seek replies from him with regard to contradictory questions the puzzle of Mheraj ud Din will remain unanswered and interrogators will remain confused about the real motives of Mehraj ud Din behind visiting Kashmir. |
