Accused ex-MLC threatens defamation against Govt
9/16/2012 12:10:55 AM
ET Report
srinagar, Sept 15: The tainted ruling party ex-MLC who was booked by the police for 'obscene act in a public place' in Nigeen area of the city has now threatened to file a defamation case against the State Government.
It is the one off example of a shamed person threatening the State for acting in time to prevent a public outrage that could have serious fallout on the overall law and order situation in the sensitive Valley. While the police is contesting the bail of the accused person he has stated that he was not involved at all in the act and he is unnecessarily being harassed and defamed.
It is now for the State Government to decide whether it takes the threatening lying down or acts firmly to ensure that such obscenity and vulgarity is dealt once and for all. The tragic memories of the sex scandal that rocked the State in 2006 are still alive in the public mind. The State Government remained on the receiving side for not acting in time against those with influential backgrounds whose names surfaced up in the infamous sex scandal. Now that a timely action has been taken, the involved person has the arrogance to challenge the State Government with legal action.
Just serving a show cause notice on the accused by the NC will definitely not serve the purpose. What he deserved was outright expulsion on the very first day. Delaying action against the person even after the Chief Minister has said no pressure or influence would be allowed to stand in the way of handing down the deserved punishment to the accused person has created doubts in the minds of the public whether at all there is administrative seriousness in checking obscenity and vulgarity in public life.
Already the head of programmes at the DD's Srinagar Kendra has been shown the door for allowing the accused anchor a morning show on the national broadcaster a day after she was arrested by the police. Now the sacked head of DD's programmes in Srinagar has said she had no knowledge about the anchor being involved in a police case when she was asked to host the morning show a day after her arrest.
Ironically, the former head of programmes has also tried to justify sending a staff car to fetch the anchor to the Kendra by maintaining that it is routine for the staff cars to fetch anchors of programmes when these are to be telecast during early hours when public transport is not available in the city.
Did that car have to fetch the anchor from a police station or from her house? How did the head of programme deal with the anchor personally? The head of programmes has admitted that she acted against the anchor after a directive from the Additional Director General of the DD who incidentally had been hosted on the same show by the head of programme herself on a day the anchor was in the police custody.
There are Aegean Stables inside the DD's Srinagar Kendra which must be cleansed quickly before the already sinking reputation of the national broadcaster results in some sort of a public outrage against the Kendra. After all, DD is a public service and it must be run as transparently as befits a highly sensitive public service like this.
