Who leads NC-Congress coalition in Jammu & Kashmir? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 18: Who leads the NC-Congress ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir ?This question has surfaced after a lot of dust has engulfed the coalition thereby blocking visibility about the man or men who lead and guide the ruling alliance. As far as the question of who is leading the coalition is concerned such an issue never cropped up during the three years when Mufti Mohd.Sayeed headed the Congress-PDP ruling coalition. One had no reason for being sceptical about the stature and strength of Mufti who was seen holding the sway over the ruling alliance. Was it the outcome of the fact that for years together, rather for several decades, Mufti headed the Congress and hence had no difficulty in carrying the Congressmen with him even after having floated his PDP ?It could be one of the reasons but not the sole and main reason. The way Mufti worked, acted and took decisions in consultation with the Congress leaders, even within the state, had endeared him to the Congress. The coalition politics has assumed new dimensions since 2008 elections. Why so? Nothing very important reason for it. Simply Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah is not prepared to play the second fiddle to the Congress high command, forget about the leaders of the state unit of the party, including the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz. Is then Omar leading the ruling coalition ?If not is it the Congress high command or the NC party leadership that runs the affairs of the ruling coalition ? It has no direct and clear answer because neither the Congress high command nor the NC leadership leads the ruling coalition. This way the choice limits to four people. Dr Farooq Abdullah,AICC general secretary,Rahul Gandhi,Ghulam Nabi Azad or Saif-Ud-Din soz who heads the coordinattion Committee. Again there is no clarity. And if Omar Abdullah has been able to keep the leaders, including the Ministers of the state unit of the Congress under thumb it is the result of growing conflict between the loyalists, headed by Soz, and the dissidents, led by Azad. As a result of this conflict consensus on cabinet reshuffle, expansion has eluded the state unit of the Congress. The NC too is divided over who should get one seat in the cabinet and sensing trouble Omar has opted for delay in resuffle and expansions. Once again he has got an opportunity for delaying cabinet expansions.Ensuing session of the state Legislature and the upcoming civic elections. It seems, even to a section of the leaders of the state unit of the Congress, that it is Omar Abdullah who has been running the show through proxy. How? Since Omar has the backing of Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and P. Chidambaram he finds himself safe in the saddle. His political survival banks on the level of war between the dissidents and the loyalists. The more they fight could ensure political longevity to Omar. (EOM) |
