Valley shuts completely in protest against blasphemous US film | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Sept 18: Normal life across Kashmir Valley was crippled Tuesday due to a complete shutdown called by several trade bodies and separatist organization to protest against blasphemous US film. There were reports that clashes between protesting youth and the security forces broke out at many places in Srinagar and Anantnag in which several people including some policemen received injuries, however, no causality was reported from anywhere till this report was filed. There was an unprecedented shutdown since 2010 and people observed complete shutdown to protest against the American anti-Islam video clip , shops, business establishments remained closed, public transport was completely off the roads, and attendance in government offices was very thin. Schools and educational institutions including the Kashmir University, its South and North Campuses, Islamic University of Science and technology and the NIT Srinagar. Work in the local courts was also adversely affected by the shutdown call. Protesters burnt US flag and effigies of US president Barack Obama near Dalgate in Civil Lines while shouting anti-US slogans. Protesters were also heard demanding complete boycott of US goods. Clashes broke out at many places between the protesting youth and the security forces, however, there was no loss of life from either side. Protesting youth broke window panes of a large number of private vehicles plying or parked on roadside. Hundreds of youth took to streets shouting anti-US slogans and marched towards historical Lal Chowk from different directions, however, police and paramilitary CRPF personnel deployed their offered stiff residence to the protesters and foiled the march after brief clashes near MA Road here in the civil lines area Protesters also set ablaze a government vehicle parked outside Sangarmal shopping mall." A police officer said that protesters were dispersed off. "Processions were taken out at many places in the city and no untoward incident was reported from any other area," he added. Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed at all the sensitive places in uptown and old city areas here to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, protesters led by religious cleric of South Kashmir Qazi Yasir were engaged in a pitched battle with the police and CRPF in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town in South Kashmir. Protesters pelted stones on security forces. however, police used mild cane-charging and fired teargas shells to disperse the protesting youth. It merits a mention here that the strike call was given by Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) which was supported by Kashmir Bar Association and other separatist leaders. The roads in most parts of the valley wore a deserted look as public and private transport remained off the roads. However, some private cars and force vehicles could be seen plying the roads.Protests against the film have been reported from several other areas which include Baramullah, Sopore, Pulwama and Shopaian. There have been widespread protests during the last seven days in the Valley against the blasphemous video which depicts the Prophet of Islam in poor light. The video which had been uploaded on the YouTube has since been blocked by various internet search engines on the request of the union telecom ministry.
