Traders allege cross LoC trade sliding down, officials reject claim | | | Early Times Report Jammu/Poonch , Sept 21: The traders involved in trade across the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) at Poonch in Jammu region say that the trade through this area is on a decline due to the indifferent attitude of governments on both the sides. However the officials rejected the claims and defended the slow down was recorded due to Eid festivity and further said it is gradually gaining. A trader associated with cross LoC Traders' Association from Poonch, that the number of tradeable items is coming down and the trade has slipped to 30% of the business taking place in the beginning. The items being traded depend on the demand and are timely items guided by season or the requirement. According to business community associated with cross LoC Trade the cross LoC trade used to be of Rs 7-8 Crore weekly which at present has dropped to roughly one crore only.” “And this is evident from the movement of vehicle which were upto 25 that now has reduced to three or four vehicles during the trading three days a week i.e. Monday to Wednesday, they added. Business community dealing in the said trade while lamenting the sliding down of the trade reasoned the non serious approach of the government to clear the list of tradable items. “Presently there are just 21 tradable items in the list, they lamented further adding, “They (officials) banned items earlier being traded like coconut, garlic, dry fruits etc. reasons better known to them.” They also regretted that lack of due banking and communication infrastructure too are main hurdles in the way of this cross-LoC trade and is retarding its expected profits. Pertinent to mention here that Chief minister Omar Abdullah had earlier said in the legislative assembly that the union government should open the banking system for the trade instead of present barter system and facilitate communication channels to boost the trade but nothing substantial is done in this regard. Even the Union Home Secretary RK Singh during his visit too have assured the cross LoC trading traders to set up centres from May this year. However official concerned and district administration has rejected the so called hindrances highlighted by the trading community and reasoned the cooling down of trade due to Ramzan month and following Eid celebrations. They however added it is picking up with a gradual trend now. |
