PM pitches for reforms, seeks nation's support | | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Sept 21: Invoking national interest, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his address to the nation said on Friday that as the leader of the country he had to take some tough decisions. Addressing the common man, the PM said, "The Government has taken some hard decisions in the interest of the nation. You have the right to know why we took this decision." "The Government's role is to take steps for the welfare of the people, so that education, health and food securities are taken care of," the PM said. "Economic slowdown is plaguing the whole world. India too has been affected. But we are at a juncture where we have to tackle slowdown in economic growth. To do this we have taken the decision to increase the fuel prices and go for reforms so that fiscal deficit could be tackled," Singh said explaining the tough stand taken by his UPA-2 Government. "If we do not take these measures then foreign investors will shy from investing in India. Money does not grow on trees," he said. "We must act before people lose interest in us," the PM explained. "We did not increase the price of kerosene as it is the fuel of the poor," the PM further said. On the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail the PM said that there was room for both small and big retailers to exist. He also said that the decisions taken by the Government like FDI in multi-brand retail and hike in diesel prices was in the interest of the nation. "The UPA Government is a Government of the aam aadmi," the PM said assuring the common man. "I promise to you that I will try my best to get the economy of the country on the path of growth," Manmohan Singh told the nation. He asked the people to support him in his endeavour and requested them not to get swayed by the Opposition plans to mislead them. He ended by asking the nation to strengthen his hands so that he could "take this great country forward". |
