JAMMU, Sept 26: Patron of PDP and former J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is a political person. He has definite viewpoints on political issues and economic issues. One may question his political views as well as his views on Pakistan, epicentre of global terrorism. But one just cannot question his views on the Omar Abdullah-led State Government, as also on the economic issues facing the people. He only hits the nail on the head when he dismisses the present regime as anti-people and anti-democratic and holds it responsible for all the ills afflicting people of the State. One may say that he is playing politics, but he is entitled to do, as his party is the main opposition party in the State. It is its fundamental duty to expose the wrong-doings of the Government and raise questions of public import. If his party doesn't do that, it would be regarded as a sinner and accused of not discharging its obligations towards the people, the real masters in a democratic set-up. He and his party are doing what they are supposed to do as the main opposition in the State, which is passing through a very critical phase.
As mentioned, Mufti also has definite viewpoint on the economic policies. He feels the people's pulse and expresses his views frankly. Take, for example, what he said yesterday while reflecting on the recent economic decisions taken by the Congress-led Union Government last week - increase in diesel price, cap on the supply of subsidized LPG cylinders and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail trade. He dismissed all these decisions as anti-people and asserted that these decisions, if not rolled back, would further add to the miseries of the already suffering people.
It was not politically prudent to attack Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Congress party, but Mufti did it overlooking the political fallout of what he said about the economic policies of the Central Government. Mufti's relations with the Prime Minister and the Central Congress leadership are very friendly, notwithstanding the fact that his party had withdrawn support from the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led State Government in June 2008 on the issue of Baltal land (Kashmir).
That Mufti took anti-Congress line and opposed tooth and nail all the three recent economic decisions which only indicates that he has the courage of conviction. It would not be out of place to mention here that his party would not mind forming the next Government in the State in collaboration with the Congress party. In fact, even in 2009, the PDP had reportedly offered outside support to the Congress party to keep the NC out of power. His attitude remains the same even today. He knows it fully well that his party is unlikely to capture 44 seats in the 87-member House. That's the reason he always keeps his doors open for the Congress, which is down but not completely out. Anyway, this is not the issue. It will be seen who forms next Government in the State. The issue is that Mufti has made common cause with the suffering of people by opposing the Congress's anti-people economic policies. His stand on these issues would surely help Mufti to expand his constituency.
