| CBI ruling gives leeway to Mir for Cabinet entry | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 30: The ruling by CBI court acquitting former minister and MLA Ghulam Ahmad Mir couldn’t have come at much better time. The Congress is in a state of flux, relations between National Conference and Congress are strained and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and party wants to make inroads and build party in the Valley. Mir along with another former minister Raman Matto and senior IAS officer Iqbal Khandey was acquitted by the CBI court in the infamous Srinagar sex scandal. Mir along with two cabinet minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed and Taj Mohi-ud-din are three elected MLAs of the Cong from the entire Kashmir valley. Peerzada has been divested of his ministry. Taj is as of now only Cong minister from the Kashmir valley. Even though, allegations have been leveled at him by some from his own party members and in administration also. The court ruling makes room for Mir for staging come back in the ministry for which he has been eyeing for quite long time. Mir is one of the few Cong leaders in the Valley who had build support and cadre in the hostile atmosphere. Its for this reason that he was re-elected from Dooru constituency in 2008. Even though the party was reluctant to give him ticket. Mir is one of the few Congress leaders who had direct link and equation with the 10-Janpath. It’s for this reason that Congress had relied on him for organizing rallies in the Valley and some time even in Jammu. Even though the relations were strained when scandal came up, but his re-election and his conduct in assembly had worked in reestablishing his links with party high command. The only impediment in his re-entry into the Cabinet would be a resistance likely to be offered by Ghulam Nabi Azad. According to party sources, there is no love lost between the two but strong cadre base in in Valley build by Mir in his constituency could work to his advantage. |
