| Amazing! Official language Urdu is Greek for Jammu Cops | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 12: Lack of knowledge of Urdu language among the Cops, especially those at the rank of Sub-Inspectors and above, is acting as a handicap in the functioning of the State police. Reliable sources in Police Department disclosed to Early Times that while the Urdu language is considered to be the language for penning down all police proceedings in the Jammu and Kashmir, several police officers who have been posted as Investigating Officers (IOs), or in-charge-Police Posts or Station House Officers (SHOs) in various districts of Jammu Province lacks proper command on Urdu language. Majority of the newly recruited youths as Sub-Inspectors undergoing training as Probationer Sub-Inspectors have little knowledge about Urdu language. This leaves them with an only option to just follow their seniors little knowing whether there are right or wrong. "Since long," sources further informed, "Urdu has been the medium of police proceedings as during earlier times, it was the only medium of instruction. Another main reason behind the lack of Urdu knowledge among the Cops is that Urdu is not a compulsory language in the schools, due to which, very few people opt for Urdu as a subject." Sources also indicated that, "majority of the people aspiring for police job do not know even the basics of Urdu language. It is only after they clear the written and physical tests and secure their names in the final list, they go for learning Urdu language through cash courses. And such a system of learning Urdu language in short time period leads to confusion while discharging the duty." Giving details regarding the poor performance of the prosecution cases in the court of law, a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, said that, "If the investigating officer has no knowledge of Urdu language , he has to depend upon Munshi (A cop of the rank of Head Constable/Assistant Sub Inspectors maintaining police records at respective police posts/police stations)." "And the Munshi, without knowing the ramifications of the case, present the case before the court of law for trial," shared the police officer further adding that ""due to the weak presentation of the challan, the accused persons get benefit of doubt and are freed." However, some of the newly recruits have their own version to express. A young Probationer Sub Inspector who lacked proper command in Urdu language shared that "The language of writing in the police department should be changed from Urdu to English. In the new recruitments, one hardly finds a recruit with a sound knowledge of Urdu. So, instead of carrying on with the old style of police functioning, the State Government should make some amendments in this regard." |
