Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 12: Amidst rhetoric of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and sports Minister R S Chib to promote sports amongst the youth of the state, the multipurpose hall of the indoor complex at MA Stadium has been reduced to a gambling den where a group of city businessmen, retired government servants and a former secretary of the State Sports Council indulge in open betting over games of Badminton every day, while the administration quietly patronizes this wrong doing by assuming a criminal silence over the crime that has continued for quite some time now.
The genuine players who want to practice during morning hours complained that this practice continues under the nose of the council administration and the I/C sports officer and the I/C manager of the indoor complex have availed exclusive time to those who come here for gambling at the expense of those who want to practice seriously. "While one group comes in the morning for open betting, the other one that comes late in the evening indulges in liquor parties in the hall" said a badminton player alleging that Ashok Singh, a weight lifting coach, presently I/C manager of the indoor complex has connived with the wrong doers rather than taking appropriate action against them or bringing the matter to the notice of higher officers. "These people do not even have the permit cards which are mandatory for entering the complex" he added.
According to a source, "the modus operandi is simple; the opponent players playing in singles or in pairs decide the stake money which is then inserted in the net and the winners grab the same after the game". "The bet can run into thousands" he added divulging that the kingpin of this illegal and criminal practice is one ex high chaired official of the State Sports Council."
Interestingly, the State Badminton Association is also hand in glove with those indulging in open betting as the secretary of the District Badminton Association is himself an accomplice in the crime.
Interestingly still, the president of the district Badminton association Jammu is none other than the IGP Jammu, Dilbagh Singh. "This has become such a nuisance for the genuine players, but the administration of the sports council has connived with the defaulters rather than taking action against them" said a former player who now brings his children for Badminton classes. "They do not only indulge in betting but fight like dogs and use uncivil, unparliamentarily language in the presence of children including women and girls. I do not have any option or else I would have taken my children somewhere else" he added.
Interestingly, the open gambling is on in the complex under the huge hoarding that has pictures of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the president and Sports Minister R S Chib, the vice president.
