| Omar contemplated resigning on being rebuffed by Cong | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 18: On being virtually rebuffed by the Cong and made to accept its demand of giving reservations to SC/ST in Block Development Council-Omar Abdullah had seriously contemplated resigning but was forced to change his decision. Omar Abdullah had made it clear that he won't cancel the process of BDC election and had even tried to blame MLAs for making this demand by saying that they weren't interested in empowerment of panchayats. CM had tried to turn tables on Cong by making this statement, which didn't take it lightly and deemed it as rebuttal to its demand. Chief Minister was dropped a silent message from the Cong high command in New Delhi sort out the things with PCC president Saif-ud-din or ship out- meaning it will be difficult for him to remain in office if its demand is not accepted. It was now his turn to get rebuff and he didn'take it lightly as he had developed a habit of having last word. Furious and disturbed he expressed his desire to tender his resignation on Monday with some of his close confidant in the party. According to NC sources, they were too dumb stuck by his desire. Earlier, he had submitted his resignation at the floor of the office when his name was dragged in the infamous sex-scandal by PDP. NC leadership convinced Omar with the logic that by doing so, he will gain moral high ground, which he achieved earlier, but would be seen as against the empowerment of Panchayat, which could have given leverage to Cong to extend its vote bank as already there is strong resentment among Panches and Sarpanches. It was in this backdrop when emergency and unscheduled Cabinet meeting was called on Monday, rumor mills churning out speculations that Omar will announce resignation. It gain more credence on the ground that NC wouldn't like to be seen as second fiddle to the Cong and buy its diktat. On the day when Omar called on Governor, the speculation assumed the proporation of prophecy, with every one in the Secretariat murmuring that Government had fallen. However, Omar was made to change his mind as NC leadership prevailed on him giving him advice that public perception is not in their favour and such had decision will be termed as nothing short of foolhardy. The party advised him to be more grounded and do more people centric work in the remaining tenure and for the time being accept the diktats of Cong and take it as an opportunity to reverse public perception in favour of NC. |
