Mughal road becoming conduit for bovine, narcotic smuggling

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 24: Since its construction the Mughal road has become a conduit for narcotic and bovine smuggling and there is hardly any day when the bovine animals being smuggled from this road are not captured by police at different nakas.
Hundreds of bovine smugglers are being smuggled from different parts of Jammu region, neighboring Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh to Kashmir Valley through this road and maximum smugglers manage to cross over to Kashmir while others get trapped.
According to sources since the construction of this road the bovine and narcotic smugglers got a lease of life who otherwise were facing it difficult to smuggle the bovines and drugs to Valley via National Highway which is being manned by security forces right from Jammu to Srinagar.
After the construction of Mughal road these smugglers heaved a sigh of relief as they managed to smuggle the bovines and narcotics to valley without facing any difficulty. However after the police higher ups came to know that the road has become a conduit for smuggling bovines and drugs, the police has intensified the vigil and over last two months hundreds of bovines were recovered while on their way to Kashmir Valley. In majority of cases the smugglers managed to escape while bovines were captured by police. However in some cases the smugglers were also arrested by the police.
Sources said with the increasing incidents of smuggling the authorities have decided to intensify vigil on the road both from Kashmir side and as well as Rajouri side to control the smuggling from this road.
Sources said that there are also apprehensions that in case the vigil is not increased over the road which is closer to LoC, it can also become a safe heaven for Pak terrorists in sneaking into Kashmir Valley and smuggling arms and ammunition there.
Sources said that army had earlier also raised objections in granting clearance to construction of this road due to security reasons. This was the main reason that the construction of road was delayed for years together, sources added.
Sources said however with the political interference and opening of the road becoming a political issue with some political parties trying to please their constituency in Kashmir the Government started the construction of this road.
However the security agencies feel that in case the vigil is not intensified on this road in can become a security risk in future in view of its closeness to LoC.
