| Karva Chauth makes City festive | | | early times report JAMMU, Nov 2 The festival of Hindu married women - Karva Chauth - was celebrated with traditional fervour here today. The city wore a festive look on the eve of Karva Chauth today as wives, even young girls attired in bright cheerful dresses, thronged the city's markets to shop for the festival. With bangles considered synonymous to the festival, an unprecedented rush was witnessed around bangle-sellers as women and girls waited their turn to get these slipped on to their arms. The markets were abuzz with activity till late night with mehandiwalas applying henna on the hands of women and girls. The women were seen doing last-minute shopping for the festival. Keeping in view the huge rush of the people in the city bazaars the security has been beefed up. "The nakas in the cities and its peripheral areas have been strengthened with additional deployment of cops and para-military force jawans".The cops in civvies were deployed in these busy markets to keep an eye on the anti-social elements, criminals, eve-teasers and pick-pockets. In the evening, women perform puja at home or gather at a place to pray and exchange the karvas. Lord Ganesh is also worshipped for the fulfilment of their wishes. The katha of Karva Chauth is also narrated. When the moon rises, they worship it and see the face of their husbands' through a sieve. After the prayers have been offered, they accept a drink of water and food given by their husbands. Almost all Indian women keep the 'Karva Chauth' fast with great faith and devotion. They wait for the fast with much interest. This is the day when even the most modern woman, in her heart feels and re-assures herself about the love, respect and devotion towards her husband and prays for his long life. The Indian society is considered to be male dominated, where women are supposed to obey the rules and regulations. But there are men who are above all egoistic barriers. Very few persons know that men too keep 'Karva Chauth' fast like women to reciprocate the sentiment towards their better half. Meanwhile a group of women inmates lodged in Jammu Central jail are observing traditional, 'karvachauth' for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. "Special arrangements have been made for the women inmates to observe 'Karvachauth' in the jail," Rajni Sehgal-Superintendent, Central Jail, Kot Bhalwal here told . The jailersaid that there are nine women inmates and all of them are observing the traditional fast adding, "items like bangles, henna (mehandi), clothes and other things were provided to them by the jail authorities." "The women on fast are given no task today and all arrangements have also been made for them to break their fast after having a glimpse of a moon in the evening," she added. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartik. Sometimes, unmarried women observe the fast for their fiancs or desired husbands. We at INIFD believe that "Talent is an Asset .... & we should use IT" Karvachauth brings out the beauty of the women and she shows the world of what metal she is made off. Thus the INIFD campus was full of fun & frolic, all beautiful and colourful with lot of hustle and bustle. Married students and teachers were all brightly dressed and the unmarried ones were also not far behind. This year, unlike previous year there was a slight twist in the competition held when students participated in traditional Mehandi Competation, Nail Art, Tattoo. Along with the competition students were also seen singing, dancing. Best prize for Nail Art was given to Anjali, Mehandi for Mamta &Tattoo by Shilpa & Rahila. |
