| Priority of PDD: To provide uninterrupted power supply to bureaucrats, politicians | | | early times report Srinagar, Nov 2 : At a time when repairing a damaged transformer meant for general public takes weeks or at times months, Power Development Department has installed a 100 KVA transformer exclusively for a senior bureaucrat in Srinagar and contemplates to install another one at the newly constructed palatial bungalow of a senior minister. Sources told Early Times that the PDD has installed a 100 KVA transformer in the house premises of Managing Director Power Development Corporation (PDC) Basharat Ahmad Dhar at Peerbagh on airport road here. Similarly, they said, the PDD contemplates to install 100 KVA transformer at the newly constructed bungalow of Minister for Rural Development Ali Mohammad Sagar at Humhama on the outskirts of the city. "The Chief Engineer PDD (R&E) Muzaffar Matoo who recently visited Sagar's new house gave on the spot instructions to his subordinates to install a new 100 KVA transformer at the spot immediately," sources said. The anti-PDD protests during the winter in Kashmir is a routine as the Department is unable to repair damaged transformers for weeks together. While the PDD blames consumers for overloading and hooking as main reason for damage to transformers, people aren't ready to buy the theory. "When the PDD has enough money to install new transformers exclusively for bureaucrats and ministers why can't it repair the damaged transformers meant for poor people. A single bureaucrat and a politician is being provided 100 KVA transformer while in several localities more than 100 households depend on 100 KVA transformer," said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of old city. As the Power portfolio lies with the Chief Minister, there is no one to heed the cries of general public. "What is the wisdom of the CM to keep power portfolio with him? Whole Kashmir gets plunged in darkness during the winter. Same happens in Jammu during the scorching heat of summer. It seems that the PDD is only meant for providing uninterrupted power supply to bureaucrats and ministers," he asked. A senior PDD official on condition of anonymity said that people aren't responsible for overloading everywhere. "The transformers in some areas were installed some 20 years back and that time the load was very less due to lesser population. With the increase in population the load has also increased but the PDD has failed to install new transformers in such localities due to which people have to face a lot of inconvenience," he said.
