Mehbooba in Ladakh- PDP reorients its strategy
11/3/2012 12:04:42 AM
early times report
Srinagar, Nov2: The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) while reaching out to the victims of communal tension in Zanskar area in the Ladakh region is trying to reorient its strategies to meet the expectations of the people of that region-a political move aimed to identify itself with the people of all the three regions of the state.
While appreciating that living close to the international border, people of Ladakh region have to deal with special problems arising out of their distinct geo-physical situation and concomitant socio-economic conditions on one hand and on the other hand managing delicate issues of multi-religious and ethnic diversity which at times gives rise to serious communal tensions.
By visiting the affected area and offering her party's help in restoration of peace and tranquility in the area, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has been able to convey the message that PDP can become an alternative for the Ladakhis too.
Interestingly the affected people had earlier expressed their dissatisfaction over the visit of the Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani.
Because of its difficult topography and unique geographical conditions, people of Ladakh division are facing hardship because of inadequate or lack of basic infrastructural facilities. Also, due to adverse climatic conditions, the working season remains very short in the region , resulting in low levels of development. Therefore, it is necessary to meet the special needs of the people of the region. And for last couple of years, PDP has tried its bit to highlight the problems of that division in and outside the assembly but it was for the first time that the principal opposition party reached to the affected people and offered its help in restoring the communal harmony in the area.
If PDP sources are to be believed, the people of both the communities appreciated Mehbooba's peace mission. While expressing solidarity with the victims of recent violence, Mehbooba met different sections of society in order to help restore peace and friendly relations between communities in the desert hinterland. On the occasion Mehbooba said the NC-Congress coalition government had miserably failed to respond to the situation in Zanskar till it resulted in violence against a small defenseless group of people in an area that is known for communal amity and tolerance. He said it was an index of the seriousness of this government about the lives of people that it sent some ministers to Zanskar one month after the initial indications of trouble that had been brewing ever since.
Mehbooba reiterated her Party's resolve to strengthen relations between different regions and sub-regions of the state. While talking to Early Times after she returned from Kargil on Friday, Mehbooba said that due to its conviction and commitments the PDP has emerged as a credible and strong political force in all the three regions of the state. She said that responding late to delicate situations like that of Padum in Zanskar, NC led coalition government has once again proved its insensitivity towards the sufferings of the people.
