EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 2: In a bid to clear all the main roads and vital arteries in the two cities of Srinagar and Jammu besides the main district headquarters of stranded vehicles and wrongly parked cars and two-wheelers the Traffic police have decided to press into service cranes or lifting and towing these vehicles.
Official sources said that in view of the limited resources with the Traffic department the authorities have decided to procure cranes (hydraulic vehicles) on a hire. Though the Department is yet to specify the number of cranes it plans to hire, it has been decided to place the order for hiring cranes on the basis of demand. Explaining the logic behind procuring cranes on hire instead purchasing them for the Department a senior functionary of the Traffic Department said that since the utility of cranes is for a limited period it would be a heavy burden on the state exchequer if the Department purchased them from the market.
However, those engaged in the task of giving cranes on hire have been assured that under the agreement they would be guaranteed of minimum lifting required for a day so that they did not suffer losses.
The officer said that the Department has insufficient number of cranes and in the light of growing traffic violations by the vehicles owners and drivers who park their cars, three and two-wheelers at wrong places and by those whose vehicles suffer faults thereby blocking smooth flow of traffic.
"We have to clear the roads of these stranded vehicles which could not only ensure free flow of traffic but also avoid road accidents," the officer said. He said that at times the demand for cranes for clearing roads of stranded vehicles exceeds availability of the hydraulic vehicles, Besides this three to five road accidents take place in the twin cities and on various highways and here the Department is supposed to send cranes for lifting the damaged buses or trucks from the bed of river Chenab or Jehlum.
