| After coalition's poll panel meeting, Cong legislators to meet today | | Political 'exercise' for LC polls gains momentum | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 18: As the countdown for elections to four seats of Legislative Council has begun, a flurry of political activities kick started by the major political parties has also gained momentum, the lead being those in the ruling coalition -National Conference and Congress. While the Election Committee of coalition coordination held its first meeting on Saturday , Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz has convened a meeting of Legislators of the party tomorrow. Ruling NC and its top leaders also held crucial meetings both at Srinagar and Jammu, though these were not convened formally.
" We have called a meeting of legislators from both the Houses to discuss and deliberate upon the forthcoming LC polls under Panchayat category……the purpose is to share views and opinions as also to ask the legislators to help contribute by garnering support of PR members from their own constituencies …", said Prof Soz. Our aim and direction to all concerned would be ensure victory of all the four coalition candidates ……….., PCC chief asserted , adding that since coalition partners have decided to contest the polls together by putting up candidates one each in Jammu and Kashmir region, it is duty of both the parties to ensure victory of all the four candidates. "We hope to win all the four seats……..", Prof Soz said adding , "it will be ensured that polls will be held in a fair and democratic manner.
While Congress has geared up its activity by convening meeting with all those whose 'contribution' and indirect 'role' would matter in garnering support of PR members , NC has also started high level albeit informal meetings to discuss the strategy and other key issues related to polls for four seats scheduled on December 3. Sources said besides Chief Minister Omar Abdullah , two ministers of the party and some senior leaders held closed door meetings related to polls in Srinagar today. In one of the meetings , held almost in series two senior Congress ministers were also reported to be present, though it was not a formal Coalition's election panel meeting.
The coalition ministers from both the parties, sources said discussed certain key aspects of the elections from Kashmir region from where both the parties have put up one candidate each. "It is a tricky strategy which Congress and NC have adopted by putting up one candidate each from Kashmir and Srinagar…though it is a foregone conclusion and very easy for coalition partners to bag all the seats yet there is some competition from rival PDP from certain pockets…", said a senior minister of the coalition government. This is why both the parties do not want to leave any chance and have started their political exercise almost two weeks ahead of the polls, he explained. It is pertinent to mention that the Election Committee of coalition led by Ali Mohammad Sagar in capacity of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Affairs Minister, which was set up last week by the Coordination Committee held its first meeting yesterday which was attended by four members of Congress and six members of NC. The election panel discussed the strategy which would be 'mutually' beneficial to both the parties in both the regions. |
