| Coalition divided over CS apointment | | Congress bats for Goswami, NC for Khandey | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Feb 13 : Even as decks were almost cleared for Iqbal Khanday to assume the office of Chief Secretary (CS), the Congress wants Anil Goswami on the coveted post.Sources said NC and Congress leaders were lobbying for their respective candidates as the incumbent CS is abdicating the post atthe end of this month. They added Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leaders had been opposing Iqbal Khanday vehemently. He, ( a senior congress minister ) sources said, has forwarded the name of Anil Goswami with the request to the chief minister to consider him for the top post. Muhammad Iqbal Khanday, a 1978-batch IAS officer and senior most Financial Commissioner in the State and 1977 batch IAS officer, Parvez Dewan were in the fray. The NC and most of Congress leaders wanted Khanday at the top post. But a senior congress leader and a few Congress leaders favour Anil Goswami a 1978-batch IAS officer. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had showed his willingness for Khanday's appointment but disagreement on part of some Congress leaders have compelled Omar Abdullah to withhold the appointment for the time being.National Conference spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq told a local news agency that the issue will be sorted out by next week. He said the government was more concerned about law and order at present. |
