| PIL seeking recovery of sales tax arrears worth crores | | DB expresses dissatisfaction over poor recovery | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 13 (JNF) : A Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Hasnain Massodi today expressed its displeasure over recovery of only Rs.9.10 crore against total recoverable Rs 612.31 crores and directed Finance Department to give more teeth to the recovery committee. Division Bench further observed that arrears recoverable by the department from Government/Semi Government Department is shown to be Rs.15.07 crore. It includes BSNL, Power Grid Corporation, Conservator of Forest (East Circle) and so many others. However, huge arrears which are to be recovered have been shown against 'non traceable defaulters' which would be Rs.138.38 crore. The arrears of existing defaulters have been shown to be Rs.86.66 crore. Division Bench left with the impression that the recovery is rather tardy and slow. Advocate General MI Qadiri has pointed out that a committee\ has been constituted to effect recovery of arrears passed by the Department of Commercial Taxes, Excise and Taxation Complex, Srinagar but no report by the committee has so far been filed with regard to the steps taken by them nor anything is available on the record to show that how effective these committees are in Jammu and Kashmir Divisions. |
