Curfew lifted from valley
Internet restored, rail services remain suspended

Srinagar, Feb 16: Curfew was on Saturday lifted from Kashmir Valley, a week after it was imposed following hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru. Three persons were killed and over 60 others were injured including 25 policemen in the clashes between protesters and security forces during the week.
"Curfew has been lifted from all the ten districts in the Valley and we hope that day will pass of peacefully," a police spokesman said.
However, normal life remain crippled as Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday extended the strike over Guru's execution and in support of the demand for return of his body to his family, till Sunday. Shops and business establishments remained closed, while public transport was off the roads due to the strike call, even though private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads in the city and other major towns in the Valley.
Meanwhile, protests were reported from some areas. According to ground reports protests erupted in different areas of Downtown city Srinagar and south Kashmir's Anantnag town.
In downtown Srinagar youth staged protests at Nawakadal, Mohalla, Kawdara and other areas and clashed with force personnel deployed there. Confirming the reports SSP Srinagar Ashaq Bukhari told Early Times that though protests broke out at four or five places in downtown area of the Srinagar city after the curfew was lifted, the situation remained by and large peaceful.
The mobile internet services which were snapped last Saturday were restored in the Valley after remaining suspended for a week in the wake of hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru.
Besides mobile internet other internet services were also restored late last evening, providing relief to nearly five lakh mobile internet subscribers among others in the Valley. Only BSNL broadband had been active in the valley after other internet services were snapped as a precautionary measure.
