| 11 MLAs abstain: Naeem, Ganie, Majeed, Parrey, Naresh declared elected | | LC polls: Smooth sailing for coalition, courtesy BJP’s split group | | et plus report Jammu, Mar 7: Coalition partners National Conference and Congress have once again managed to sail smoothly in the Legislative Council polls, though waters appeared to have turned turbulent for some time with an independent candidate in fray supported by opposition PDP. Thanks to the breakaway group of BJP , whom the NC led government has kept to draw political mileage in its favour as and when situation emerges for ‘exploiting’ them. Coalition narrowly managed one seat because the group of seven MLAs abstained from voting, a political ploy that went in favor of NC and Congress. In all 11 members abstained from voting in the polls. While the victory of PDP candidate Naeem Akhtar was on expected lines, Showkat Hussain Ganie and Abdul Majeed of National Conference besides Moha-mmad Muzaffar Parrey of Congress from Kashmir Division made it to Upper House by securing the requisite number of votes that were cast in their favour. However, the victory of Naresh Kumar Gupta of Congress of Doda was only a foregone conclusion as per the electoral college of the polls. In all 78 out of 89 votes were cast for candidates in Kashmir Division whereas in Jammu Division for one seat, 74 votes were cast. PDP’s Naeem Akhtar Andrabi secured 19 votes, Showkat Hussain Ganie 17, Abdul Majeed Bhat 16 and Mohammad Muzaffar Parrey 17 votes, whereas the independent candidate Shuban Krishen Dudha got only 9 votes. While coalition candidates got required number of votes for registering victory, it was far more comfortable position for Naresh Kumar Gupta who secured 50 votes and therefore an easy victory for him. While this goes the autopsy of number of votes in the electoral college, a larger question remains about political ploys in the game of polls. Ruling NC for the last two days has been accusing both BJP and PDP for what they call as ‘unholy’ alliance in what they saw BJP’s real four legislators deciding to support Dudha. Whatever both PDP and BJP announced and acted upon was an open strategy in the polls. But coalition, particularly NC has played even more tactical game which is in fact a ploy they use every time when required. It is an open secret that BJP’s group of seven legislators are there to come as savior for the government under any circumstance and situation, including of course at the time of decisive polls like this one. After this group indulged in cross voting two years ago again in favour of coalition, after a long procedure of fair justice they were found to be guilty and therefore faced expulsion from the party. Ever since they have no identity nor have they faced any action in terms of disqualification from the House. This goes without saying as to why government has kept their issue of disqualification lingering on and action reserved against them. However, by doing so and allowing this group to conduct in manner they have been, the government is only weakening its anti defection law. Meanwhile, abstaining from voting was only a one more ploy to help coalition register victory on all the seats from Kashmir. Besides this group, PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yasin, CPM candidate MY Tarigami and JSM MLA Ashwani Kumar also stayed away from the polls today.
