| Rahul Gandhi's constituency Amethi no longer a district | | | New Delhi: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday struck down the district status of Amethi terming its creation as illegal. Amethi is Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's political constituency.
Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh chief minister in 2010, had carved out the district by taking Salon and Tiloi areas from Rae Bareli (Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's parliamentary constituency), and adding Gauriganj, Musafirkhana and Amethi tehsils (revenue sub-divisions).
After Samajwadi Party came back to power the district was renamed Amethi.
A PIL challenged the decision to create Amethi in the Allahabad high court. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday ruled in favour of the PIL. |
