Ansari says suspend MPs who create indiscipline in Parliament, parties reject his intervention
4/22/2013 12:25:04 AM

New Delhi: Sending a strong message against 'competitive hooliganism' among MPs, Rajya Sabha Speaker and Vice President Hamid Ansari said, "I have witnessed, as you have, the propensity in the House to dispense with decorum, disregard the rules of procedure, treat them with contempt, and violate them with impunity."
Ansari called for tough measures including suspending members to curb indiscipline ahead of second half of Budget Session, however political parties have rejected his intervention. He also suggested deferred broadcast of the House proceedings and proposed listing of rowdy parliamentarians in the Rajya Sabha bulletin.
"The government can't silence the nation's voices. They suggested they would stop live telecast of channels. We opposed this. How can they do it? The government should come forward and solve the issue. They can't," Shiv Sena Leader Sanjay Raut said.
Earlier, addressing an all-party meet, the Vice President slammed what he called as competitive hooliganism of MPs and suggested that the Rajya Sabha rules be changed for automatic suspension of disorderly members.
He said adjournments have been taken with disturbing frequency and that if this practice goes unchecked, public esteem for Parliament as the highest forum of our democracy will be adversely affected leading, eventually, even to questions about its very relevance.
"We were discussing the ways in which we can avoid obstructions in the House. One suggestion was automatic suspension of the member who disrupts the house," Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan said.
