Fisheries potential of Pulwama, Anantnag to be exploited: Dr. Manohar

srinagar, May 21: Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Fisheries, Dr. ManoharLal Sharma has said that all necessary measures would be taken to exploit fisheries potential of Pulwama and AnantnagDistricts and directed the officers of fishers department to take necessary steps for stopping the extraction of sand from the spots prohibited and notified by the department.
The Minister was reviewing the prospects of exploiting fish resources of Aaripal, Narastan, Jawaherpora Lam, Dohbiwon, Shikargah and the areas of District Anantnag at an officers meeting here today.
Director Fisheries, R.K.Dogra, officers of Fisheries Department, senior Congress leaders, Mr. Manzoor Ahmad Ganie and SardarChanni Singh, representing Anantnag and Pulwama district respectively, were present on the occasion.
The Minister said that Pulwama and Anantnag Districts have vast potential for trout fish development and asked the officers to come up with detailed projects after conducting surveys of the areas so that same are forwarded to the Centre for approval and funding.
Dr Sharma instructed the officers of the department to take necessary measures and ensure that extraction of sand and boulders does not take place at notified areas. He asked them to take up the matter with
concerned department including Geology and Mining, and also take help from District administration in checking this practice. He directed them to activate field functionaries and increase vigilance on streams where the department stocks the seed.
The Minister also asked officers to launch an awareness campaign to sensitize people about the schemes of the department and disadvantages of sand extraction. He directed officers to be tough against the violators and put them to task under relevant law.
