| Prof Talat inaugurates research methodology course at KU | | | Srinagar: Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Talat Ahmad Tuesday inaugurated a 10-day workshop on Research Methodology for Ph. D students at Ghandi Bhawan here on Tuesday. The event is being organized by Department of Sociology University of Kashmir in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The inaugural session was attendant by scholars of various disciplines of science and social sciences from and outside the state. Eminent social scientist and former Dean Faculty of Education, Prof A G Madhosh, Prof M A Wani, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Head, Department of Sociology KU and Course Director, Prof Bashir Ahmad Dabla were present on the dice. In his presidential address, Vice Chancellor Prof Ahmad encouraged the scholars from various universities to base their researches on facts and interpret them by applying tested methods of research. “Researchers should provide a comprehensive outlook about the topics they have chosen. Their thesis should be based on statistical methods of research which enables them to make it objective and widely accepted,” Talat advocated for a separate research methodology paper mandatory for every scholar which, he said, will help the scholars to apply the apt research methodology in their studies.” Prof Talat was all praise for the department of Sociology for organizing he course and asked other departments to take cue from this initiative to organize courses of such nature in future. In his inaugural address, A G Madhosh, chief guest of the occasion scholars should conduct their studies on the contemporary issues to help move society forward. “Universities have a pivotal role to play in the society; they (universities) should become torch bearers to the society. Scholars have duty towards their society and by doing research on the contemporary issues the societies can be made better,” he said. Speaking on the occasion, Dean Faculty of Social Science Muhammad Ashraf Wani said the researches must have an aim and their studies should be futuristic. “Mere collection of facts is not research but the right interpretation of the facts is research. A research must have an aim and that must be theory guided. The duty of the researcher is to formulate right kind of questions and seek right answers from apt sources,” Prof. Wani said. Giving details about the course Prof Dabla said, “The course would mainly target research scholars (General/ST/SC/OBCs/Minorities) pursuing Ph. D in various streams of social sciences to develop a comprehensive understanding of scientific methodology and its application in social science,” adding that the course would provide a critical overview of the concepts and theories of research methodology used in scientific research. Prof Dabla said it will help in formulation of proposals for different academic assignments in order to create a scientific orientation among the participants.“Research methodology in social sciences is dynamic in nature and preparing and submitting a research proposal or publishing a scientific paper has become a challenging job. We aim to train the participants about the use of statistical techniques in order to enlighten social phenomena in Social Science disciples,” Prof. Dabla added. Senior faculty Dr Anisa Shafi maintained that the need to impart expertise and skills in social research is increasingly being experienced and the situation has posed several methodological challenges and dilemmas before the mature and budding social scientists. In the first session of the workshop, Prof. Noor Muhammad presented a paper on the Nature of Scientific Methods and its Application to Social Phenomenon and Nature, Importance and Scope of Research. Around 40 participants from across the country will take part in the course, besides faculty members, Ph. D scholars of social science and other allied courses from different universities of the valley. |
