| Rajiv Gandhi was architect of modern India, Sonia epitome of sacrifices: Taj | | | Srinagar: Senior Congress leader and Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-Din Tuesday paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister of India, late Rajiv Gandhi describing him as the architect of modern India. Addressing a function, organised by J&K Congress Seva Dal, to mark the occasion, Taj said late Rajiv was a visionary leader who envisioned the needs and prospects of India much ahead of its times. Minister of State for Health, Shabir Ahmad Khan was also present on the occasion. Recalling the contribution of late Rajiv, the Minister said it was he who thought of computerisation in the country when it was thought to be impractical. He said late Rajiv was the visionary Prime Minister who took India to heights of excellence in technology, science, defence and social justice in which the Indians of present times take pride. Taj said it was late Rajiv who conceptualised the devolution of power at village level with appropriate reservation to women and weaker sections and thus the present form of Panchayati Raj system came into existence. He said it was his earnest desire to see this devolution taking place. On the political acumen of late Rajiv, the Minister said he took the reign of the country when India was passing through difficult times and many analysts had painted a dismal future for Congress and the country. How India and Congress later shined is a glaring page of history, he said. Terming Sonia Gandhi as the epitome of sacrifices, Taj said like her illustrious husband she too had to take responsibilities of leading the party, though reluctantly, in tough circumstances. He said the sacrifices of Nehru-Gandhi family form the core of Congress commitment to the country which every worker swears by. Dismissing the charges made by BJP, the Minister described the party a divided house which has not been able to make a consensus on prime ministerial candidate and is dividing the society as a premium. He said Congress is set to emerge victorious in the coming elections given the trust people of the country have reposed in it from time to time. On the activities of Congress Seva Dal, Taj said their selfless contribution during the earthquake of 2005 cannot be understated. He said Seva Dal is the acronym of dedication, sacrifices and selflessness. He asked the volunteers to gear up and ready themselves for the coming general elections and not fall prey to the propaganda of vested elements. Earlier, the Minister laid floral wreaths on the memorial of late Rajiv Gandhi. |
