| Bhalla asks poor women to avail training courses, other SWD schemes | | | Distributes sewing, tailoring kits to women Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 23 : Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture, Mr. Raman Bhalla today asked the poor women and other weaker sections of the society to take benefit of schemes meant for their socio-economic development. Minister was addressing a large gathering after distributing sewing machines and tailoring kits among the women trained in tailoring by SWD at an Awareness camp, organized by Social Welfare Department, here today at Rajiv Nagar. District Social Welfare Officer Mr. Kulraj Singh, besides other senior officers and locals in large numbers were present on the occasion. He said that Government has launched several welfare schemes to provide assistance to poor and downtrodden, including schedule caste, schedule tribe, physically handicapped persons and other backward classes of the society, adding that Social Welfare Department (SWD) is implementing many schemes meant for their socio-economic amelioration. Mr. Bhalla said that with the liberal funding from the Central Government, several welfare schemes for the under privileged people are under implementation in the State. He stressed upon the people to come forward and avail the benefits out of these schemes, particularly those offering opportunities to the women to be self-reliant. He said besides providing old age pension to destitute males (60 years and above) and females (55 years and above) having no means of subsistence, the SWD is also imparting training to girls in various crafts to enable them to be self dependent. He called upon them to strive for becoming economically independent by honing their skills by attending these training courses. He also asked the underprivileged parents to educate their children as the government was providing pre and post matric scholarship to SC, OBC and physically handicapped students. He also listed financial assistance schemes for widow or divorced poor women physically handicapped, including blind, deaf and dumb having no source of income. He said under National Family Benefit Scheme, the Government was providing ‘one time’ financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 to the BPL family in case of death of primary bread earner. The Minister said Government was also providing pre-matric scholarship to SC, OBC and physically handicapped students from Ist to 10th class, for SC category, there is no income bar. For OBC/Physically Handicapped Parental income shall not exceed Rs. 2100/-per month. Mr. Bhalla said that centrally sponsored schemes like Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of adolescent girls commonly known as SABLA and Indira Gandhi Matrivta Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) have greatly helped the young adolescent girls to lead a dignified and healthy life. Mr. Bhalla further said that Government was also providing wheelchairs, tricycles and hearing aids to the needy persons. |
