Workshop for Saakshar Bharat Mission concludes

SRINAGAR: A 2-day orientation cum problem solving workshop for implementation of Saakshar Bharat Mission, organised jointly by Ministry of Human Resources Development department and Department of school Education, J&K State concluded here today.
Secretary Education Hirdesh Kumar presided over the function while as State Project Director, SSA, S.C. Sahni was Guest of Honour, Director School Education, Kashmir, Mr. Tariq Ali, Chief Consultant, NLMA, S.P.S. Sangwan, Assistant Educational Advisor, GoI, Waseem Ahmed, Dy. Secretary, GoI, MHRD, ManikMandal, Sr. Technical Consultant, NIC, Pratibha Singh and Director SRC, Shimla, O.P Bhuraita attended the function.
Addressing the concluding function, Secretary Education complimented the organisers for organising 2-day workshop in which presentations were encouraging and eye openers for all stakeholders. He hoped that the participants must have learned many new things for practical use in day to day working as functionaries of education department. Mr. Hirdesh assured the officers that the government is always ready to cooperate, guide and support all fruitful ventures aimed at providing quality education to the student community.
He said that the principal target of the SB mission is to impart functional literacy to 2.3 million adults in the age group of 15 years and beyond and to make Saakshar Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the efforts of the government will be to make sustained efforts for social and economic empowerment of women and to reduce female illiteracy to nil in next three years.
State Project Director Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, S.C. Sahni on this occasion said that Saakshar Bharat Mission
aims at further promoting and strengthening adult education, especially for women by extending educational options to those adults who have been lost the opportunity of access to formal education and crossed the standard age for receiving such education.
Mr. Sahni said that the mission has four broad objectives which includes to impart functional literacy and numeracy to non- literate and neo- literate adults., to enable the neo-literate adults to continue their learning beyond basic literacy and acquire equivalency to formal education system, to impart non and neo-literates relevant skill development programmes to improve their earning and living conditions and to promote a learning society by providing opportunities to neo literate adults for continuing education.
All the DIET Principals, Chief Education Officers, Zonal Education Officers and Secretary BOSE were present in the workshop.
